PATINA-01 | seebeyondreality studios
Description
Patina-01 is seebeyondreality studios’ first and only stool design—an experimental university project exploring the potential of bent ⅛-inch steel finished with a beautiful heat-induced patina. Inspired by Sori Yanagi’s iconic butterfly stool, it balances functionality with artistic intrigue, creating a statement piece that enhances any space with its striking form and thoughtful craftsmanship.
Design Process
The fabrication of Patina-01 followed a structured design process, beginning with initial sketches to explore the stool’s form and functionality. To refine the concept, I consulted with my professor to determine the appropriate steps for execution. With a clear direction, I developed precise measurements based on the intended spatial context of the stool.
Next, I translated the design into a 3D model using Shapr3D, ensuring accuracy before fabrication. I sourced ⅛-inch steel and carefully cut it into the required shapes. The steel components were then shaped using a pyramid roller and assembled through MIG welding to ensure structural integrity.
For the finishing process, I applied a heat patina using an oxyacetylene torch.
